| Dave started canoeing with his dad in southern Ontario when he was 4 years old. Through his younger years, he paddled on many small lakes fishing with his dad. His dad taught him the basics about canoeing but the biggest thing Dave came away with was the majesty of the canoe, and how he felt like the canoe and water came together as part of him as he paddled. |

| There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance, adventure, solitude and peace. The way of a canoe is the way of the wilderness and of a freedom almost forgotten, the open door to waterways of ages past and a way of life with profound and abiding satisfaction. – Sigurd Olson |
