There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance,
adventure, solitude and peace. The way of a canoe is the way of the wilderness and of a freedom almost
forgotten, the open door to waterways of ages past and a way of life with profound and abiding satisfaction.

BWCA Photo Workshop
with Photographer
Layne Kennedy
Sept. 14 - 19, 2010
This unique BWCA Photo Workshop trip is a great opportunity to develop your
photography skills under the direction of renowned magazine and nature photographer
Layne Kennedy.  A Minneapolis-based photographer, Layne's work is featured frequently
in
Smithsonian, Life, Newsweek, Forbes, Outside, Audubon, Backpacker, Sports
Illustrated
, and National Geographic publications.  His students range from photography
professionals to point-and-shoot neophytes.

We met Layne while guiding dogsledding trips at Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge near Ely.
He has led dogsledding photo workshops at Wintergreen for over a decade.  People learn
so much while having so much fun during his workshops that we know a summer
paddling version will be a great fit!  We're very excited to offer this special opportunity.

A brief slide lecture by Layne will open the session followed with daily trail discussions
and a workshop theme.

After the first night in the lodge, you will journey with others who share a similar interest
in photography, develop photography skills, and immerse yourself in the wondrously
photogenic natural beauty of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Trip cost per person is $975 and includes your first and last night's stay in an Ely
lakeshore lodge, expert photo guidance from Layne, four days and three nights of fully
outfitted paddling and camping in the BWCA, and a seasoned canoe camping guide.  It
also includes all of your meals from the time you arrive on September 15, until you depart
on September 20.

Minimum group size is four participants and maximum group size is seven participants.
Workshop participants should be prepared to photograph with 35mm cameras, primarily
digital but film is fine. However, no film processing is available. A variety of lenses such
as a wide-angle lens (20mm-28mm) and telephoto (200mm-300mm) are adequate for
specialty lenses. A flash and tri-pod are also recommended.

If shooting digital, please supply your own media flash card(s), card-reader, blank
CD’s/DVD’s, and laptop computer (with CD burner if possible). Knowledge of how to
convert your images to jpegs is important for the final show. A slide critique of
participants work will take place on the final day or evening. Participants shooting film
should bring a minimum of 10 rolls of transparency film (36-exp). Digital Flash cards
should be 1GB or 2 GB cards if possible. Extra batteries are a smart choice too. And, bring
your battery/camera charger to the workshop.
