His wilderness guiding experience spans
canoeing, kayaking, and also dogsledding. In the
winter he spends much of his time near the
center of the BWCA in Ely, guiding trips for
Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge.

Dave is the Founder and Executive Director of
the Wilderness Classroom Organization, a
nonprofit that introduces thousands of students
to the world’s wild places. Currently, he is
kayaking, canoeing and dogsledding 11,000 miles
as part of the WCO's North American Odyssey.
Previously, he paddled a three-part WCO Trans-
Amazon expedition. He has explored elsewhere
around the world, including circumnavigating
Lake Superior by kayak, dogsledding across
Canada, and canoeing throughout Peru, down
the Mississippi and also on the border route
between the United States and Canada.

Dave Freeman has guided canoe trips in the
BWCA for many years. Most of his summer
work for the past 15 years has been on the
eastern end of the BWCA. He knows a thing
or two about guiding a short half-day
adventure or a long multi-day trek in the
Boundary Waters. He has also guided kayak
trips on Lake Superior.

There is magic in the feel of a paddle and the movement of a canoe, a magic compounded of distance,
adventure, solitude and peace. The way of a canoe is the way of the wilderness and of a freedom almost
forgotten, the open door to waterways of ages past and a way of life with profound and abiding satisfaction.
